Colic, Reflux & Constipation: Looking Beyond the Symptoms
If your baby is constantly crying, arching, struggling with reflux, or having difficulty with bowel movements, you’re not alone. These are common challenges in infancy “grow out of it.”
Looking at the Bigger Picture
Your baby’s nervous system helps regulate nearly every function in the body, including digestion, sleep, immune function, growth, and relaxation.
The autonomic nervous system works much like a gas pedal and brake. The sympathetic nervous system helps the body respond to stress, while the parasympathetic nervous system helps the body rest, digest, and recover.
When a baby’s nervous system is under significant stress, it may have difficulty shifting out of that “fight-or-flight” state. This can contribute to difficulty settling, digestive discomfort, poor sleep, and challenges with regulation.
Looking Beyond “They’ll Grow Out of It”
Birth and early life can place significant physical demands on a developing nervous system. Rather than focusing only on individual symptoms, we look at the bigger picture of nervous system function.
Diet, feeding mechanics, and other factors can certainly play a role in colic, reflux, and constipation. But they may only be part of the puzzle.
Our goal is to understand how your baby’s nervous system is functioning, identify areas of stress or imbalance, and track changes over time.
Your baby isn’t “just a difficult baby.” There may be more to the story—and understanding the ervous system can be an important part of finding answers.
